Zagreb - city of culture

Zagreb is the capital of the Republic of Croatia and it is a distinctly central European city situated in the middle of the triangle of Vienna, Budapest and Venice. The history of Zagreb dates as far back as 1094 when the Hungarian King Ladislaus founded a diocese. Alongside the bishop's see, the canonical settlement Kaptol developed north of Zagreb Cathedral, as did the fortified settlement Gradec on the neighbouring hill; the border between the two being the Medveščak creek. Today the latter is Zagreb's Upper Town (Gornji Grad) and is one of the best preserved urban nuclei in Croatia. Both settlements came under Tatarattack in 1242. As a sign of gratitude for offering him a safe haven from the Tatars the Croatian and Hungarian King Bela IV bestowed Gradec with a Golden Bull, which offered its citizens exemption from county rule and autonomy, as well as its own judicial system. According to legend, Bela left Gradec a cannon, under the condition that it be fired every day so that it did not rust. Since 1 January 1877, the cannon is fired daily from the Lotrščak Tower on Grič to mark midday.

Ophthalmology in Zagreb

Autochtonous folk medicine practice in Croatia was mostly based on the use of herbs in the treatment of eye diseases. The first document on the presence of medical activity was one in which the Republic of Venice gave Draga Slava permission to practice medicine in 1330. The 19th century was the turning-point for the development of ophthalmology in Croatia. The basis for well-organized clinical, preventive and social ophthalmological care was established. Zvonimir Pavisi and Kresimir Cupak were the leading persons in Croatian ophthalmology in the second half of the century. Croatian ophthalmologists were organized in the Section for Ophthalmology as the part of the Medical Association of Croatia from 1926 up to 1992, when the Section changed its name to the Croatian Ophthalmological Society, with more than 250 members. Inspite of the difficulties, Croatian ophthalmologists tend to use almost all modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods in use in the world.

We perform a general ophthalmological examination (glasses for vision correction, eye pressure measurement ..) and the treatment of ophthalmic diseases. It is possible to make corneal topography (determining the shape and irregular surface of the cornea) and field of view. The clinic is held by Dr. K. Ćuruvija Opačić, a specialist with extensive experience in contactology, president of the Section for contactology HOD, a member of the European and the American Association for contactology and a member of the Presidium of the European Association for contact lenses (ECLSO). In the gastroenterological office we can make special examinations for diseases of the digestive system, liver and pancreas, abdominal ultrasound, gastroscopy and colonoscopy with or without anesthesia and tests for Helicobacter pylori (from a stool and a biopsy).
