JOSIP UNUSIC, DR MD, PROF. DR. SC.

He worked as a GP after college and he started his general surgery residency in 1971 in University Hospital Centre Zagreb, Croatia. He took his professional exam in general surgery in 1975 and worked at the Institute for Plastic Surgery and Surgery of the Breast ever since. He got his doctorate of medicine at the School of Medicine at the University of Zagreb in 1981 from the field of surgery, and 1985 became a docent at the School of Medicine. In 1990 he became a professor at the School of Medicine at the University of Zagreb.
 
From 1999 to 2003 he worked as the chief of the surgical clinic on the Clinical Hospital Rebro, Zagreb.
From 2003 to 2007 he worked as the head of the institute for plastic surgery and surgery of the breast at the Clinical Hospital Rebro, Zagreb.
 
Since 2007 he is retired, but still works actively in the private Clinic Dr Toncic.
Prof Dr Unusic is one of the first in Croatia who did an arm and hand transplant. He was especially involved in the field of microsurgery and surgery of the peripheral nerves.
 
He did breast reconstructions after mastectomies under the guidance of Prof Prpic as well. A significant number of doctors were educated and mentored in the field of plastic reconstructive surgery by Prof Dr Unusic.
 
He regularly participates as a lector as well on professional congresses in Croatia and abroad.
His continuous desire for improvement led him during his work on many different schoolings at the renown medical centers abroad (from the Center for Plastic Surgery in GB, Clinic for Plastic Surgery in Vienna, Austria to Schools of Medicine in New York and Boston, USA).
 
He published over a hundred of scientific and professional papers and participated in writing the textbook for general and plastic surgery. He partakes in the organization of the symposium on breast cancer at HAZU.
